The oceans are the last frontier of legal and illegal exploitation for food for anexploding world population. Large scale operations using electronic detectioncan now eliminate whole populations. Amateur and professional activity hasstripped life from sea shores near population centres all over the world. Ocean environs urgently needprotecting. Bag limits are a token effort to control our rapidly decreasing fish numbers, of species not previously targeted. NSW Fisheries are now proposing a bag limit of zero on Wobbegongs as they are "thought to be vulnerable". Tathra was actually settled after its wharf had been built. Many farmers had seen the need for a reliable local port facility from which to send their produce to Sydney. For many years, the only reliable link with the city was by steamers that carried everything from the district including cheese, butter, pigs and passengers. On the southern voyage the steamers brought supplies and luxury goods which were not available locally.
