From Belgrave to Bega!

Introduction and a short biographical history.

Hello visitors!

Let me begin by introducing myself.
My name is Nick Wallis, I'm from Selby, a small town just outside of Melbourne in Victoria (and right next to Belgrave, home of the famous narrow-gauge steam train, Puffing Billy).
After I finished high school in 2004 I studied Liberal Arts for 2 years, while I volunteered in various organisations, including 2 community radio stations (3MDR and SYN) and a youth science organisation (Young Scientists of Australia).

It was at the end of 2006 that I realised I could pursue radio as a career, rather than a hobby. I initially was under the impression that there were few jobs in radio and I should pursue something else. What else to pursue, I didn't know, because although I love science, I really suck at complex maths!

2007 I started studying a Post-Graduate Diploma of Arts (Commercial Radio) at Swinburne University of Technology.
The course was a one year crash course in Commercial Radio, recognised and supported by Commercial Radio Australia.
I learnt a lot from Jim Barbour (course lecturer) and Peter Marcato (who filled in for a semester while Jim was on holidays), as well as my other friends in the course and guests we had in to class.

Over summer 2007-2008 I worked casually at a servo and with Vega 91.5FM and decided to start looking for jobs in about February '08.

Power FM 102.5 & 104.3FM

I applied for the position of Production Manager at Power FM and 2EC in Bega and on Friday the 29th of February (Leap Day!) got appointed!

Belgrave to Bega

From Belgrave to Bega

So now comes the part where I move out of home, away from everything and everyone I know, into a part of the world I had never visited before until very recently and into a life I have never yet lived.

(2 weeks later)
It's been two weeks up in Bega now, quite enjoying the town so far!
Over those two weeks I spent one in a hotel, the other in my new house withno furniture, bed, power or gas for a few days there.. got most of that worked out now though!
Haven't organised internet in Bega yet and i'm being kept VERY busy at work, which is great!
Back in Selby at the moment packing all my stuff away, ready for the move.
I'm looking forward to settling in and organising myself a bit more once I'm up there again tomorrow.

2EC

Work with the station has been excellent so far, very busy, but learning a lot, meeting some really wonderful people and generally enjoying myself! I think it'll get a lot easier once I'm settled in a bit more and have had a bit more time to learn everything and meet everyone!

Over the past two weeks I've come to see a lot about the region and noticed that although the south coast is relatively scarcely populated, the community is very alive, active and thriving! With websites such as these and a seemingly constant barrage of community events like festivals, meetings of community groups etc., maybe it's just the time of year, but it seems very active!
