LOCAL BEGA VALLEY NEWS ...

With hundreds of registered users in the network, many people are using the on-board promotional tools we have created in consultation with the community. These tools include an Events Calendar.

Now we have created a national Events Calendar at events.org.au so that people from all over Australia can view events created here (and vice versa).

events.org.au is a terrific new way of presenting events in one easy to remember web space.

Your events will still show in your website and on the Home page of your community website.

It's free to register in the network and load your events.

This move is part of our commitment to building sustainable communities.

How will the Future look?

Visit this fascinating site to understand how David Holmgren, a great leader in the Australian initiated Permaculture movement, describes our journey back through the looking glass.

We are running out of oil, our food costs are spiralling and our leaders quibble about 5 cents on the price of fuel.

This is the website of a real leader.

Last Chance to View Brogo Permaculture Gardens

30th and 31st August 2008 - 10am-4pm

With Brogo Permaculture Gardens about to go on the market for sale, this coming weekend is your final opportunity to see this unique property. Described by many good judges as one of the best examples of permaculture design in cool temperate regions, the weekend is highlighted by its designer John Champagne conducting guided tours explaining the thought behind what you see.

"Its one thing to look at a property such as this and see a random assembly of plants and animals but an entirely different understanding occurs when the thought behind what your experiencing is explained. What you will see is a culmination of clicking permacultures 12 principles into a framework that guarantees an outcome to meet the basic needs of our family."

Features of the property include an ownerbuilt passive solar mudbrick home; an active photovoltaic power system; keyline water harvesting; integrated orchard systems; hand-built composting toilet; greywater reuse to orchard; windbreaks that work; over 70 different species of edible fruit including many sub-tropical varieties and frost mitigation techniques.

Guided tours begin at the top of the driveway each day at – 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.00pm. Entry is $5 per adult with pensioners and children under 16 admitted free with proceeds going toward IDEP (Indonesian Development for Education in Permaculture.) Refreshments available for sale in the kitchen.

Directions to the property can be found on the Home Page at permaculturedesign.com.au

The richness of food and community

This is what we are lucky to have in this part of the world and this is what the Cobargo Community Garden Group in the triangle area is going to build on.

With most people living in a rural environment and having the luxury of space to grow fruit trees and some vegies in their own gardens and with many community groups to link with, it makes sense to utilise these resources.

The community garden group are going to get together every third Sunday of the month, connecting people who are willing to exchange knowledge and produce with those people who want a bit of help and encouragement. Let’s face it: we all learn something new in every garden.

These monthly gatherings will combine a formal “meeting” and a workshop/talk/demonstration/hands on help or trip in various locations.

The first workshop on Sunday the 24th of August, will be based on garden design in a garden in Cobargo and September will be a trip to a working community garden. Hopefully these trips will encourage people to work towards the establishment of a big community garden on one site, where everybody could benefit from its produce.

Details will be postedat communitygardens.org.au or contact Ana Walker on 64936746 / 0417936746.

With links already with Seed Savers, Transition towns, Community Gardens, Community Food and a commercial outlet to sell produce in Cobargo, the community garden group is on its way to sharing all things organic.

Dads Debrief

Dads Debrief is an informal gathering of dads in the Valley that provides a chance to discuss dad matters with other dads.

Dads have different perspectives to mums, different ways of interacting with their family and different ways of coping with family situations. There are numerous support systems and networks for mums particularly after birth, now there is a network that recognises dads go through major changes too and may need an avenue to chat about it.

We meet for an hour or so once a month at the Commercial Hotel beer garden in Bega.
