Who are we?

A group of mothers and community members who are advocating for safe, women centred, family orientated and accountable maternity services in the Bega Valley Shire.

Safe: We would like access to care provided by a quality obstetrician. There has not been a permanent obstetrician employed in the Bega Valley since 2001, why is this?

Women Centred: We would like continuity of care. We would like the opportunity of knowing the people who will be in the room when our babies are born. We would like the option of having a midwife attend our normal births.

Family Centred: We would like access to a facility that acknowledges the needs of our partners and children and understands that they are a big part of our transition to parenting a new child.

Accountable: We would like the Greater Southern Area Health Service to be informed by the community, by the women, the consumers using the service. We would like our information to be representative of the whole community, taking into consideration all social circumstances and locations.

Please note BirthCentral is not asking for the closure of any services and has no opinion on the location of the proposed new health facility!

Background

The current situation in the Bega Valley Health Service is that women have no choice of maternity carer or access to free antenatal care. We are provided with two under resourced facilities that cannot provide 24-hour maternity services or an obstetrician. We have to alternate between the Bega and Pambula hospitals on a short term and unpredictable schedule. This means that women often do not know where they will be having their baby until they go into labour. It also means that they may be transferred before during or after their birth. As a consequence many women are booking unnecessary inductions and caesarean sections, going home too early, going home in pain and going home with breast-feeding problems. This situation can lead to postnatal depression and parenting problems. Women are also leaving the area and going to Cooma, Moruya, Canberra and Sydney to have their babies because they don’t want to have them here. This is costly to families and reduces the number of babies being born in the area and could cost us our service in the long term.
