Just a Piece Of Paper?
Making Your AVO Work For You
In recognition of the needs of women who have gone through the legal process of obtaining an Apprehended Domestic Violence Order (ADVO), the Southern Women's Group Inc in Bega has produced and is distributing a booklet entitled "Just a Piece of Paper?? Making Your AVO Work For You".
The booklet was written to address some of the issues women face when obtaining ADVO's. It contains ideas and suggestions to assist women to maintain the strength that they initially found to obtain the order. Some of the areas covered in the booklet include police response; the importance of reporting breaches; personal record keeping; aiding and abetting/entrapment; cross AVO's; AVO's and children; AVO's and family law; varying an AVO and following up on police action. The booklet is a tool that will hopefully provide some useful information and is designed to help women understand their rights and responsibilities in maintaining an effective AVO, so it is not ‘just a piece of paper'.
Currently the 2nd edition of book is being written by Maree Livermore with funding from the Law & Justice Foundation of NSW. First edition was launched at the 2004 Reclaim the Night event in Bega, in conjunction with the Bega Valley Domestic and Sexual Violence Committee and Candelo Books.
