BEGA ATHLETICS CLUB INC.

Little athletics is a sport for children aged between 5 and 17 years that is all about Fun, Fitness and Family. Saturday morning competitions are therefore designed to be a fun competition; the athletes are involved in activities to improve their fitness and parents assist with the running of the day. As a result, it becomes a family activity. Athletic meets require a large number of officials to run the events. For our saturdays to run smoothly all families need to be involved. Please offer to assist - hold a tape or a stopwatch, record results or organise heats - there are a multitude of jobs that require little expertise but are essential for the smooth running of the meet. We are a happy organization out to provide something for our kids that we think is worthwhile.

REGISTRATION

When you register as a little athlete, you are given a book and two cloth numbers. These are very important. The numbers must be sewn on the front of your T-shirt. The small one refers to your age group and should be sewn on the top left hand side of your shirt. The large one is your special ACT Little Athletics registration number which identifies you and allows you to enter in ACTLAA competitions. This should be sewn on the centre of your shirt.

Your book allows you to keep a record of your events, times and distances. Each week you are given tickets which can be pasted into your book. At the back of the book, there is a space to record your results on a table and in this way it is easy to see if you have made an improvement.

SAFETY AND BEHAVIOUR

Athletics is a relatively safe sport but there are some necessary rules for the safety of both spectators and participants Warm-Ups it is important for children to do warm-up exercises before running or jumping  This prevents pulled muscles and tendons.

On the track Parents, little brothers and sisters and athletes must be aware of the track at all times. A collision between an athlete running in spikes and a spectator wandering carelessly on the track could result in a nasty injury to both parties.

Where possible walk around the edges of the oval to get to an event on the other side. Please treat the track like a busy road, look before you cross and do not let little ones wander around unsupervised.

Spectators are not allowed within 20m of the finish line, as crowding near this area makes the timekeepers job more difficult. Timekeepers need to be able to see the starter, so please do not stand too close to the track and avoid standing in areas between these officials.

Throwing events These events present the biggest danger because both a discus or a shot put could cause very serious injury. Areas around these events are clearly marked and it is essential that everyone takes great care to obey rules set by the officials running the events Remember we are dealing with children learning these events so some throws can be rather unpredictable, so keep yourself and small children clear of the entire area when an event is in progress.

Emphasis is made on reminding athletes and their parents to wear adequate sun protection in the form of sun screen, wide brimmed hats and Tshirts rather than singlets. It is also essential to drink plenty of fluids during the morning. Drinks are available but plain water is one of the best ways to replenish body fluids.

Insurance

The Association has the following insurance policies which cover all affiliated centres:

  • personal accident insurance covering athletes, trial athletes, officials, coaches and spectators:
  • Directors , and officers , liability insurance;
  • public liability insurance.

PARENTS - HOW YOU CAN HELP

Athletic competition requires a lot of helpers as several events are run at the same time. Finishing the Saturday morning competition at a reasonable hour depends on assistance from all parents. Most of the jobs are simple, holding a measuring tape or stop watch, recording results, assisting in some way. Some tasks such as time keeping may seem difficult, but take little effort to learn. We are always anxious to have as many helpers as possible and are only too happy to show you how to do the tasks involved.

The first day of competition will be learning days for helpers, most assistants enjoy their morning and the children love to see Mum and Dad there supporting them and assisting. We pride ourselves on being a family club so please try to do your share of helping.

The club will also be holding several working bees to complete various tasks, (times and dates will be advised) if you would like to help and have a little time to spare, please come along.

If you have a child in the younger age groups and would like to be an age manager, please let us know. This is probably one of the most rewarding tasks to do, as it allows you to see your child in all events and for you to learn more about each of the activities.

New South Wales Government Legislation requires all volunteers to sign a Prohibited Persons Declaration.

Coaches

We ask everyone to remember that the coaches in our club are all volunteers. These coaches offer their time and services for the benefit of the athletes.

COMPETITIONS AND CARNIVALS AT OTHER CENTRES

Carnivals and competitions are held by other centres and by ACTLAA at various times throughout the season and children are encouraged to attend these competitions. Correct uniform with appropriate numbers must be worn

The regional championships will be held at Queanbeyan's Wright Park and we hope that our athletes will choose to compete and give themselves the opportunity of qualifying for the ACT State Championships. Parents of athletes competing in carnivals are required to assist, as the club is committed to supply officials in proportion to the number of athletes competing Regular competition will not be held on the weekends of the Regional or State carnivals.
