What's new?

With over 40 photo galleries posted to date and 60 odd tunes in the Arranging workshop, I thought it appropriate to create a site time line and make things a little easier for regular visitors. I would have to be seriously bored to embark on a site history at this stage, so I'll content myself with going forward from the 3rd December 2006. If you're new here, by all means rummage around in the archives....Take your time....Come back as often as you like.

23.10.09

A new Photo Gallery: Birds 15 - White Necked Heron

I've made a few changes to my Arrangement of Poor but happy to improve the midi sound and fit a little more closely with my current playing of the piece.

20.6.09

I have made some changes to the Native Plants and Weeds page along with a major update of the local natives, weeds and fungi,  photos data base. Thanks as always to Steve Ryan for technical support.

11.5.09

More Bird photos - Birds 14 - Brown Thornbill, Lewin's Honeyeater and Yellow Tufted Honeyeater.

29.3.09

New gallery - Birds 13 - Yellow Robin

21.3.09

A new photos page... Birds 12 - Unusual Visitors

16.1.09

I've taken down the "Bats and Turtles" page and replaced it with a full page on each of the "Long necked Turtle" and  Grey headed flying fox (see previous entry.)

I've added a photo of young grey butcherbirds to "Birds 3"

15.1.09

A new photo page - "Grey Headed Flying Fox"

20.10.08

An original tune - "The Wayward Reel"

I have this tune  from the fertile mind and pen of my friend and fellow "Eclectic Kitchen"  band member David Harris.

While working out some chords for our band arrangement I realised that it would make a satisfying and guitar friendly picking piece.

Given a little left hand analysis and preparation, (bars 11 & 12) - the arrangement is straight forward. The tune is well named as "wayward" however and I found that it takes a while to lodge securely in your memory to the point where you can relax into the music and let it breathe.

Well worth the effort though - have fun.

19.9.08

Another old timey tune - Lonesome John. Simple enough to be picked up in a single session, yet very satisfying to play. You'll need to capo to the 5th fret to play it in the original A dorian mode.

8.8.08

Another version of the Reel of Mullinavat - this time in A Dorian mode. After writing out the Em version I found that My fingers seem to prefer producing the tune with Am shapes so I posted this alternative as an Arranging Workshop exercise.

7.9.08

Reel of Mullinavat - An Irish reel in E dorian, that lends itself to a slow and contemplative treatment.

I have also reworked a phrase from one of my own tunes - Doing the business

25.8.08

A Children's rhyme - Snake baked a Hocake

Snake baked a Hocake
Set the Frog to mind it.
Frog fell to dozing
Lizard chanced to find it.

Bring back my Hocake
you long tailed Nannyo
Bring back my Hocake
you long tailed Nannyo

A new tune for the arranging workshop : Eli Greene's Cakewalk. My source for this tune  was  the  excellent "Portland Collection" tunebook by Susan Songer and Clyde Curly.

29.6.08

I have repaired the 12 most recent of my posted tune links, as they seem to have been broken by some tectonic movement in thebegavalley site.

24.3.08

A new photo added to my Dragonflies gallery. I've also had a stab at identifying two of the species shown with help from "A field guide to Insects in Australia" by Paul Zborowski and Ross Storey.

I've made a change to my arrangement of "Hunting the Buffalo". My mate Ross plays the B section with a predominantly 4 chord (major) bass. I liked that idea, but didn't want to abandon my original 6 chord (minor) harmony entirely, so I've played the 4 chord in bars 1 & 2 (B section) then reverted to the 6 chord where the melody repeats in bars 5 & 6. This works well and is a simple illustration of an arranging technique quite commonly employed in ragtime pieces.

9.3.08

A new tune - Fishing Blues. This is a well known American old timey song. Like Coloured Aristocracy, it has a cakewalk feel.

7.3.08

New photo page - Dragons and Damsels

3.3.08

I've redone my arrangement of Abe's Retreat using the melody from Susan Songer and Clyde Curley's fine tunebook "The Portland Collection" I've also posted a new tune, Stir it up, which is based on my original Abe's Retreat arrangement.

2.1.08

New Photo gallery: Flowers 4 - True blue

29.12.07

Old Timey American traditional tune - Hunting the Buffalo

Photo galleries Butterflies 2 - Zizina labradus altered and Butterflies 4 new

10.12.07

A new spider page - meet Stephanopis barbipes

28.11.07

The Noisy Friar - This tune was inspired by yesterday's dawn chorus. The Noisy Friarbird, amidst it's usual raucous squawks and rattles, occasionally surprises with a burst of melody similar to the first 2 bars.

26.11.07

A Shetland Reel - Willafjord.

29.10.07

Sonny's Mazurka

29.9.07

A new photo page - Quiet Places. I thought that would be a good theme name for images taken around the State in National Parks and Flora Reserves etc. More to follow.

19.9.07

Another of my own tunes - Whiskey Kisses

More bird photos - Birds 10 and Birds 11 These images were mostly taken during a recent trip to Brisbane and so feature some more northern species.

9.7.07

A pleasant hornpipe - Ryan's

6.6.07

One of my tunes - Doing the business

5.6.07

Two new photo galleries: Birds 8 - shore birds from Mystery Bay and Birds 9 - I've staked out the bird bath in our garden for this one.

25.4.07

French tune - Branle Des Chevaux. A Branle is a dance form.

25.3.07 I have appended the name "Rosbif" to a tune I had been calling merely "The French Waltz" - Apparently Rosbif is the name of an English group who recorded this French waltz of unknown name and the band name has stuck to the tune.

One of my own tunes _ Reality 2

19.3.07

Weevil - Chrysolopus spectabilis page created - Bugs page modified.

5.3.07

Breton tune - Tri Martolod

A Breton tune - Le Marinier

15.1.07

American Old Time tune tradition - Run rabbit run - My only source for this tune is the excellent "Old time mandolin music" album from Clyde Curly and the Oxymorons.

This arrangement will give you a workout on pretty much all the right hand elements of my picking style - some straight up alternating thumb bass with the melody under the fingers on the top 3 strings, some single note runs which I execute with alternating thumb and index finger and some 'melody in the bass' thumb strum and high note ringing drones.

8.1.07

New photo gallery - Grasshopper 2_nymphs

Irish tune - Spootiskerry

4.1.07

A single jig from the British Isles - Coleraine

My original "Beetles and Bugs" page has been formed, with additional photos into a Bugs page and Beetles 1 and Beetles 2

31.12.06

I've altered my setting of the Conjewai Polka so that the rythmn figures have a sustain value more closely approximating my actual playing. (My expertise within the powertab editor remains a work in progress.)

28.12.06

My pages have a new banner and background design with improved navigation menus. Thanks to Geoffrey Grigg and thebegavalley team for their generous consideration and support. The Graphic design was created by Rod Paddick.

27.12.06

English folk song - The water is wide

23.12.06

Made some changes to the Lost Indian and Arthur McBride tune arrangements. I'm mainly trying to get the midi rendition to sound a little closer to my playing. I'll be reworking one or two others to this end over the next few weeks.

10.12.06
